Brother (2000)

Even this movie belonged to his expert way likes Violent Cop, Boiling Point, Sonatine and Hana-bi but its look seemed to be clearly different from others by setting its scene at the United States including many English conversation parts.

Brother is the story about Japanese Yakuza who was banished to the United States and try to start his new life. However, he discovered that everything still remained the same no matter where he was.

This movie keeps Kitano's standard quality but some of his fans do not satisfied as usual because they thought Kitano too stuck with his own' old way. Moreover, they stated that using weird scene decreased his potential and made his film not great as produced in his own motherland.

However, Brother is the sample of Kitano's effort to made his film being international and got satisfying success. Moreover, Kitano's fans still must see.

แม้ว่าจะเป็นงานในแนวทางถนัดของคิทาโน เช่นเดียวกับ Violent Cop, Boiling Point, Sonatine และ Hana-bi ทว่าโดยรูปลักษณ์หน้าตาภายนอกแล้ว Brother ดูแปลกแตกต่างจากเรื่องอื่นอย่างเห็นได้ชัด ด้วยการกำหนดฉากหลังให้เรื่องราวเกิดขึ้นในสหรัฐอเมริกา รวมทั้งมีหลายฉากหลายตอนที่ใช้ภาษาอังกฤษ

เนื้อหาเรื่องราวโดยย่นย่อ กล่าวถึงยากูซ่าจากญี่ปุ่นที่ถูกเนรเทศไปใช้ชีวิตในอเมริกา เพื่อเริ่มต้นชีวิตใหม่ แต่แล้วเขาก็ได้พบว่า ทุกสิ่งทุกอย่างยังคงเหมือนเดิม ไม่มีอะไรเปลี่ยนแปลงเลยสักนิด ไม่ว่าจะเป็นนักเลงท้องถิ่น พวกค้ายาเสพติด กฎ กติกา มารยาทในโลกของนักเลง และการตัดสินปัญหาต่าง ๆ ด้วยความรุนแรง

คุณภาพโดยรวมของ Brother ยังคงอยู่ในเกณฑ์ดีตามมาตรฐานของคิทาโน แต่ก็มีแฟนประจำส่วนหนึ่งไม่ค่อยชื่นชมงานชิ้นนี้มากนัก ด้วยเหตุว่านอกจากจะยังคงเกาะเกี่ยวอยู่กับทางถนัดเดิม ๆ แล้ว การใช้ฉากหลังที่แปลกเปลี่ยนออกไป ทำให้คิทาโนแสดงศักยภาพในการทำหนังของเขาออกมาได้ "ไม่เต็มร้อย" เท่ากับงานที่ทำในญี่ปุ่น

อย่างไรก็ตาม Brother ก็ยังเป็นความพยายามในการ "โก อินเตอร์" ของคิทาโนที่ประสบความสำเร็จในระดับที่น่าพึงพอใจ และเป็นงานที่บรรดาแฟนประจำของเขายังคง "ต้องดู"
